The newest versions have been heavily refined for a much more linear tone stack sweep, so you get a fully usable sweep where the action does not feel bunched up in one corner of the knob.
This is the Wretched Witch- heavily inspired by the tones of Burning Witch, the lowest, slowest, darkest music project to ever have been concocted by humanity. A band, that shaped what I perceived as dark and rotten in music. While Burning Witch is not known to use this circuit, as soon as I stomped it on it reminded me of Crippled Lucifer tone.
It is a Sunn Beta Lead Preamp circuit in a box, with an independent , one knob pre RAT for the ultimate doom combo. (rat section has internal trimpots to set the gain and filter)
I have the honor of owning a real, 1981 Sunn Beta Lead 4x10 combo. This pedal sounds exactly like it.
The preamp loves to be dirty.
This circuit works perfect into the effects loop/straight into the power amp as a stand alone preamp. It gets that SUNN growl and loudness, as this pedal has loads of volume available. I mean LOADS.
Also sounds amazing as a pre-preamplifier gain stage- meaning plugged straight into the front end of the amp. The beta lead drive does not have a typical gain texture, as it utilizes CMOS stages. This is rather uncommon, and results in a one of a kind drive flavor that is hard to describe in words.
Variants
V1 same circuit and sound, larger enclosure
Kryptonite into the darkness is the V1 with an added octave fuzz circuit- 3 circuits in one box, one foot switch for each. One off that will never be made again!
V2- more compact and with a faceplate
