VARIANTS

V4 is absolutely insane; the percolator on absolute steroids.

I letter stamped the controls, but still they need explanation.

basically though, it takes the mods from the V3- but adds a 4 mode switch. that big knob in the middle toggles between 4 unique modes.

mode 1- stock, only percolator.

mode 2- muff saturation transistor gain stages into the hp crunchy doom with dynamics and harmonic complexity of the hp.

mode 3- op amp gain stages cascading into the hp. brighter than muff mode, more clarity, with distortion/overdrive like quality with the textures of fuzz.

mode 4- broken. just broken fuzz.

also full clean blend module. blend, clean gain control, and clean low pass.

the jfet boost has been modified as well. there is a second gain stage available to be dialed in or out with the bottom right knob.

the controls-

top row (left to right)

b for balance. post gain control/volume essentially.

t for tone. needs the tb (tone bypass) toggle to be engaged for this to be active.

b for bias. when the mode switch is on massive mode, you can get some amazing artifacts and self oscillation with the bias control.

p for pre gain

middle row knobs (left to right)

b for boost

big middle knob is mode

w for weight. extra gain for the boost foot switch side.

clip- s silicon, g germanium, n none.

order switch- boost into perc or vice versa.

tb- tone bypass or engage for the tone control

m for mode. this is different from the mode rotary big knob. controls the frequencies let into the circuit which controls the overall frequency response of the entire circuit. middle is bright, i think left was massive/overload, and right was stock. maybe left and right are flipped I can not remember.

the percolator itself

A hybrid GE/Silicon fuzz with a unique feel, sound, and character.

Very harmonically unusual fuzz here. The different clipping modes really make a difference in this circuit, creating new and interesting textures with each mode.

I set the switch so that the fuzz jumps in amplitude as you turn it clockwise- with no clipping diodes being the most loud and aggressive.

The Percolator is one of the most mysterious and revered fuzz/distortion circuits ever created.

Designed in the 1970s by the Milwaukee-based Interfax company, it remained virtually unknown for decades, until it became a widely known part of Steve Albini’s distinct guitar tone. Albini, known for his work in Shellac and for recording iconic records like In Utero and Surfer Rosa, used the Harmonic

Percolator not as a blanket fuzz, but as a weaponized texture: brittle, mechanical, and coldly articulate.

Steve needed the HP when he "needed the guitar to play itself"

His endorsement turned the pedal into a cult obsession among noise rock, post-hardcore, and experimental players.

The Harmonic Percolator delivers a unique form of saturation- clipped and aggressive, yet strangely controlled. It creates a tone that seems like it lies on the fine line of linear and chaos. It has a distinctive ability to generate sustained feedback and odd overtones without losing focus, making it feel almost synth-like in behavior. What sets the Harmonic Percolator apart is its focus on producing even-order harmonics, a rarity in pedals. Even-order harmonics are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency (2x, 4x, 6x) and are typically associated with warmth, musicality, and the soft saturation of tube amps.

In the Percolator, this concept is flipped. The even-order harmonic content is delivered through a hybrid of silicon and germanium transistors. This creates a tonal result that is both harsh and oddly pleasing an aggressive tone with a harmonic sweetness buried inside the saturation.

the feel

at times, the percolator can feel very squashy with heavy pick attack. This is actually quite ideal for music with heavy emphasis on dynamics, such as blues, where soft notes need to be cleaner and defined, and heavy louder ones need to be sustained.

It is splatty at times but not quite in the unpleasant, velcro voltage starved/dying battery way that more people are used to. More with a sort of envelope compression thing going on.
