szef. the tone of the bosses.
this is midnight coast electro construction and modern revival of the jordan boss tone circuit. built on eyelet style board, point to point style, vintage construction.
introduced in the 60s, this unit used to plug directly onto your guitar.
this version is based on the "nashville" variation.
what category of effect does this fit into?
vintage fuzz. full of unique character and tending to sound different unit to unit.
fuzz is more textured, and non-linear than other types of drive. out of all the drive categories, fuzz has the most obvious differences from circuit to circuit. a very wide range of textures and feels here.
generally good for emphasizing lead melodies in a song, and providing a layer/background of grain. it is like adding a blanket of unique timbre.
how would I describe the feel and texture?
a ripping, heavily textured fuzz with ever evolving glitchy, phantom octave overtones.
very articulate yet rich.
beautifully dynamic, this pedal has a massive range of lighter saturation with light pick attack, to heavy thick fuzz when you dig in.
The phantom octave is controlled via the right knob- the gain/fuzz/texture control. most pronounced either at counter clockwise, (all the way counter clockwise will induce self oscillation) or full clockwise will also give you fuzzed out heavy phantom octave.
the middle range of the right knob is more normal and slightly cancels out the octave.
there are just some extremely unpredictable and beautiful under and overtones in this circuit.
what kind of player would like this stompbox?
if you want a touch sensitive fuzz that easily goes from soft to fuzzy controlled via pick attack.
those who love the vintage style fuzzes that take you back to the old recordings.
someone who wants a fuzz that has very interesting artifacts in the background- this fuzz feels constantly surprising. It feels uniquely itself and unlike any other fuzz circuit.
