Originally introduced by Univox in the mid 70s a bit of an underdog, now sought after by fuzz collectors, the Square Wave was always a bit of an outsider, a fuzz circuit that did not follow the traditional paths. With unique JFET/Silicon Transistor design, this fuzz has a unique character of its own.
This pedal has been loved by those who have gotten the twilight version of it- quite a wonderful circuit here.
This modern interpretation stays true to the spirit of the original, but expands on it in ways that invite far more control and color.
I spent quite some time tinkering with it, feeling like the original just needer more- and I made it into the best version it could possibly be.
The DIST control is deceptive. Not sure why Univox decided to name it that, but it doesn’t add gain- it actually chokes or opens up the fuzz. One side is a bit more snarly and raspy, while the other side is open, warm, and full, with a wonderful bloom character.
-
Counterclockwise, it creates a brittle, starved, fizzy texture — high-end fizzle and ghosted frequencies.
-
Clockwise, the low end swells back in, the gain thickens, and the whole circuit begins to thump with massive saturation.
A 3-way clipping toggle expands the palette further:
-
Silicon: classic, meaty distortion — tight and aggressive with sharp edges.
-
Vintage: soft, compressed, and sputtery. The most typical "fuzz" texture with slightly lower output.
-
Open: diode-less chaos — loud, raw, and wild with massive transient spikes.
Built by hand using premium components. Each Square Wave is made to outlast the era it pays tribute to.
COLORS-
the raw aluminum finish option is built fresh to order, and generally features standard components.
The circuit will be built in a raw aluminum case with no paint, but will get lightly sand polished.
knobs will be dealers choice.
on average, 5-10 day build time.
