signal calamity.
The death by audio apocalypse was the first big muff I ever clicked with. the one that showed me how versatile it could be, it is a platform that can be twisted, modded, and tweaked many ways.
This is my own take on the apocalypse- it shares the same idea in that it has 4 unique modes, but it does not share any identical sounds the apocalypse has. It is a smaller, compact enclosure as well.
These are considered prototypes because the original designs did not work as intended- but I went through and revamped the whole thing to come alive how I originally imagined. Perfectly functional, but a flawed core PCB that I worked around to make it right.
Variant notes
Each of these modes has a completely UNIQUE tone, saturation flavor, frequency and dynamic response. It is really like having 4 fuzzes in one box!
V1 signal calamity
the left center knob is a 4 position knob that selects between 4 unique signal paths
- boosted muff (less gain higher headroom)
- standard muff
- muff into rat gain stage
- singularity mode (highest gain, massive output, infinite sustain)
V2 signal calamity
the left center knob is a 4 position knob that selects between 4 unique signal paths
- standard 4 transistor
- rat distortion gain stage (yes, a beautiful mashup between muff and rat saturation)
- op amp boost
- harmonic mangler (just pure signal mangling)
this version also includes a 3 way clipping- stock, LED, and none. What the clipping mod does it lets signal above a certain threshold bypass the gain stage- LEDs need a lot of signal to active so almost all frequencies and signal is amplified so this mode is a lot gainier and loud. No clipping diode lets no signal escape- and can drive the circuit into some strange interactions.
How it sounds/feels/texture and general notes
This muff has an amazing modified tone stack that has one, if not the best tone sweep of any muff.
It is a big muff so you are gonna be soaring with massive, crunchy walls of fuzz.
what category of effect does this fit into?
Fuzz/Distortion- at its core this is muff style circuit, and these blur the lines between fuzz and distortion. In the hands, feels more like a distortion, but a bit looser and more unwieldy (think like maneuvering a light sword vs a heavy sword) but each note hits massive, with the decay and texture of a fuzz.
The rat and singularity mode feel more like distortion than the 1st two modes on the V1.
what kind of player would like this stompbox?
The heavy minded, wall of fuzz chaser. But also, if you are somewhat tired of the standard muff and want some fresh, interesting takes on the circuit that still do a muff thing but have a completely different feel and sound.
Shoegaze enthusiasts, doom, sludge, nugaze, stoner, you name it. The muff has been pretty famously used across far more genres than listed here.
features
thick click, abuse resistant mechanical true bypass switch.
big ol fat mode knob.
9v, center negative operation. around 50ma current draw.
