Roger Mayer Octavia
Roger Mayer Octavia
This is a modernized recreation of the roger mayer octavia, done the twilight way. This one is the transformerless version. This is not the variant heard on purple haze, but the design is similar, and will result in a similar sound.
Now Roger Mayer is very secretive about his design, so I am not sure if the schematic online is based on the rocket or vision version. The rocket version is the latest one connected to Jimi and was used throughout the Band of Gypsys era.
I am a MASSIVE hendrix enthusiast. If it was not for him, my life would have gone down a completely different path. I have his music to thank for everything I have today.
That said, I would not release these for sale if I did not believe they did not pay proper homage to Hendrix. It absolutely nails that late hendrix sound. I spent a LOT of time tweaking this circuit.
I made some changes to the design I found online, as this circuit was picking up a lot of RF interference (typical and normal of vintage circuits) so I added some mods to reduce this as much as possible without changing the tone of the pedal.
Note, that this circuit is STUPID loud. I keep the volume below center on clean amps, for already clipped amps/dirty channels, crank that mfer for a nasty, heavy fuzz.
The octave is most pronounced with your guitar tone controls dialed back to the bassy side. With certain guitars, the octave is more prevalent with the neck pickup, and the volume slightly rolled back.
As with many vintage fuzzes, your guitar is apart of the circuit. It will interact different with different guitars. Experiment with the guitar controls to discover new sounds.
COLORS
The purple one is a really special heavily modded one I dub the "Twilight" variant.
This twilight variant has two toggles, one toggle toggles between bass, or high frequency modes. For either a hi cut, bassy sound, or a high end screaming monster.
The other toggle is awesome as well- it switches between vintage and modern diodes in the octave rectification stage. These give two unique saturation/fuzz characteristics.
The red one a simplistic, drive and volume style octavia.
