This is not your average fuzz box. A modern recreation of the mythical and nearly extinct Sam Ash Fuzz Stainer of the early 1970s, this unit captures the essence of a forgotten era—where silicon transistors were pushed past their limits and fuzz sounded like a dying star caught in a radio tower.
Originally sold through Sam Ash stores in limited quantities, the original Stainer-built circuits were inconsistent, unstable, and completely unhinged. On top of that- this is a 4 knob version. The original only had tone, volume, and fuzz. This one adds bias- for even greater range of textures that range from choked and broken crackle, to properly decaying, dynamic and thick raspy fuzz. That’s where this build comes in: a faithful, slightly tuned recreation of the legendary beast.
Controls:
- Fuzz: From warm breakup to full-tilt saturation.
- Volume: Loud. Unity is somewhere around 9 o’clock.
- Tone: shifts from full to raspy and high forward
- Bias: A special control that alters the texture and gating response.
Sound:
- Raspy, high heavy fuzz at more normal settings.
- thick, full, yet still buzzy at higher fuzz and fuller tone settings
- LOUD AF- this thing has a ridiculous amount of volume on tap.
- sputtery- broken, glitchy and chaotic with bias adjustment.
Twilights Contributions:
- No Tone Bender. No Big Muff. No Fuzz Face. This is a lane of its own, rarely explored and never overdone.
- Handwired, high-quality components, and built with care to honor the chaos of the original.
This is a rare chance to own the sound of a forgotten chapter in fuzz history, rebuilt from the shadows with modern reliability.
