I would not say one is inherently better than the other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI would describe mine as a lovely, washy, beautifully texturing machine. It does not overpower your signal, but has just the right amount of texture to create an immaculate, watery feeling to your sound. Mine also has an active volume control- meaning it can cut or boost volume. 4 stage on mine can be a bit subtle below middle depth positions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vintage unit, was like psychedelic syrup. It did not like to be nearly as subtle. It did tend to overpower the guitar sound a bit- it was very in your face and thick, and I would say it did more tone coloring than the twilight vibe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI still will end up redoing the entire twilight vibe circuit board. A final version is near, but not fully set in stone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe right footswitch activates the effect, and the left footswitch toggles between two pulse speeds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe C\/V switch toggles between chorus (classic univibe sound) and vibrato (a strange, life filled wave pulse)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA beautiful homage to the psychedelic blues wave this pedal is.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVARIANT NOTES\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ethe v3 melted earth prototype has a hole where the vibrato\/chorus switch used to be. the top and center knob now functions in its place, allowing for a wide blend of chorus sounds when CW, and vibrato sounds when CCW.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eV4-\u003c\/strong\u003e the texture is less syrupy and psychedelic, and more of a shallow ocean sounding wash. Quite nice because it is not overbearing on the sound- it adds a wonderful touch of background ambiance to your tone. Like being on a peaceful dreamy coastal getaway with the light, shallow waves gently moving over you. Instantly change between two sets of frequencies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach mode has its own unique voice as well, with the passive eq sounding more natural and \"vintage\" and the active eq being more powerful and modern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ethe left foot switch controls a high headroom, high fidelity clean boost. This is a 6 mode version, instead of 4 mode like the signal calamity. This one was more an attempt at an actual replica of the apocalypse, but smaller. It was based off an incorrect schematic that I recently reworked. many of the sounds are similar to the apocalypse but with their own inherent sounds, and feels.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emode 1 - scoop. Mid scooped, big muff fuzz with a more crunchy distortion like voice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emode 2- muff, crunchy, loud big muff.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emode 3 - dual jfet- two cascading jfet op amp gain stages. More clarity and distortion like clarity of all the modes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emode 4- octave- this mode is broken sounding and gets a really crazy squash\/compression and release that varies with the gain control. Sounds like a squashed wasp.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emode 5- x1000. A singular op amp pushed to its gain limits for MASSIVE, overloaded sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emode 6- was suppose to be a noise mode, but it sort of just sounds like fuzz with its own character. CMOS based fuzz.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHas a 3 way clipping toggle, and a different tone control feel\/function than the signal calamity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach of these modes has a completely UNIQUE tone, saturation flavor, frequency and dynamic response. What the clipping mod does it lets signal above a certain threshold bypass the gain stage- LEDs need a lot of signal to active so almost all frequencies and signal is amplified so this mode is a lot gainier and loud. No clipping diode lets no signal escape- and can drive the circuit into some strange interactions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHow it sounds\/feels\/texture and general notes\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis muff has an amazing modified tone stack that has one, if not the best tone sweep of any muff.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is a big muff so you are gonna be soaring with massive, crunchy walls of fuzz.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewhat category of effect does this fit into?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFuzz\/Distortion\u003c\/strong\u003e-\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e at its core this is muff style circuit, and these blur the lines between fuzz and distortion. In the hands, feels more like a distortion, but a bit looser and more unwieldy (think like maneuvering a light sword vs a heavy sword) but each note hits massive, with the decay and texture of a fuzz. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rat and singularity mode feel more like distortion than the 1st two modes on the V1.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewhat kind of player would like this stompbox?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe heavy minded, wall of fuzz chaser. But also, if you are somewhat tired of the standard muff and want some fresh, interesting takes on the circuit that still do a muff thing but have a completely different feel and sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShoegaze enthusiasts, doom, sludge, nugaze, stoner, you name it. I disowned germanium transistors for a long time at the very start of my career. Until I built a real, proper MK1 tonebender and started learning what they actually are supposed to sound like.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow I am addicted to germanium fuzz. Especially the tonebender series.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt just roars and textures like no other. It is by far the highest gain germanium transistor circuit I have come across.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt feels like what I imagine amps about to explode sound like.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHow does it sound?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTons of volume on tap.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStock, the circuit has a cut below 150hz, lacking low end. I left it like that in past builds, but in almost all new MK1 builds, I modify the circuit so no low end is lost. Because I love low end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt mainly feels like it roars. Certain tonebenders can be smoother than others. But generally, they all roar like some 60s cranked marshall addicted rock star is having a second go at life through your amp.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith all the mods, there are tons of windows of opportunity with this circuit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat mods did I include?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMore low end than the original.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA 2nd and 3rd transistor bias to dial in the perfect texture and operating characteristics. Sort of helps with temperature fluctuations tone variability that happens with germaniums as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA bypassable tone control- for a neutral fuzz tone like the original, or a low pass\/high pass tone filter knob. Helps to cut highs and boost lows or cut lows and boost highs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA mini Swell knob- controls the pre gain control, which in turn, controls how deep the swell\/bloom becomes with your pick attack. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eDon't know what bloom\/swell means? think of it like a flower, you hit the strings hard, the note compresses, then blooms into its full, rich body. It is controlled via your pick attack, and you can reduce the bloom by dialing the guitars volume down, effectively making your guitars volume knob a sort of compression control.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA bypassable or engageable octave up toggle, to turn this fuzz into the biting, clanging, harmonically complex fuzz similar to an octavia, foxx tone, etc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003emode (bottom left)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ezonk- brightest, least low end. Lots of top end bite.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMK1- stock mk1.
