I am thankful everyday that I live in a world where the HM2 and FZ2 exist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth of these are iconic Boss circuits that were the defining sounds of some of the most important metal bands in history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis pedal is an marvelous pairing of two of bosses filthiest circuits, in one compact enclosure. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe HM2 side is widely known as being the chainsaw sound- it is the key to the guttural mids crunch of the infamous norwegian black metal bands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe FZ2 side, is my favorite fuzz circuit that has ever been invented. It is a souped up Univox Super Fuzz- an octave up fuzz that strikes like lightning.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis circuit is the sound of one of the heaviest bands in the universe, Electric Wizard. This circuit can be clearly heard as the core sounds for 2 of their greatest albums, Dopethrone, and Come My Fanatics...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewhat category of effect does this fit into?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOctave fuzz- (fz2 side) \u003c\/strong\u003ean analog effect that combines heavy distortion (fuzz) with an added, crude higher pitch one octave above the note being played\u003c!--TgQPHd|[]--\u003e. It relies on a raw, glitchy analog circuit rather than clean digital tracking, resulting in an aggressive, synth-like, and harmonically rich sound. When playing chords, the octaves create these off, metallic, harmonically clashing frequencies.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDistortion\/Fuzz (HM2 side)\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis circuit also blurs the line between distortion and fuzz, but I would suggest it sits closer to the distortion side of the effect spectrum. It can have a fuzzy sound when fully cranked, but it feels more like a distortion to play.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003ehow would I describe the feel and texture?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe HM2 Side\u003c\/strong\u003e is a nasty, filthy, distortion with the tone section being the most renown part. since it borders on fuzz, this circuit definitely is not a typical distortion. There are quite a lot of ways to use this pedal, contrary to the primal urge to crank all the controls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe key magic of this circuit is the mids. The mids are something to experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe distortion texture itself, is not all that tight and articulate. It actually feels quite loose and messy, in a very good way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of my friends actually uses an HM2 for a very popular shoegaze project that many of you have heard before. You would never guess. It is more than just a filthy grind box.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe FZ2 Side\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis circuit has some sort of magic to it. I am not sure how a fuzz can embody the deep mysteries, emptiness, vastness, and darkness of space, but it does just that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith an ever evolving cascade of rich harmonies and thundering frequencies, this sound channels the powers of the great beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGreat for massive power chords. Pair with some reverb and it feels like you are soaring on the highest clouds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt begs for low and slow riffs. However, its reputation and association with electric wizard has people using it in a box. It works wonderful for the hendrix style octavia blues sounds at lower gains as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewhat kind of player would like this stompbox?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDefinitely this specific combination is meant for the heavier player- not just a heavy player but the one who appreciates brutal, in your face textures that can not be ignored. Players who want to sound massive, yet abrasive, in two completely different contexts of filth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a pedal for the doomers, sludge enthusiasts, grind\/blast beat addicts, and noise artists.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003efeatures\/mods\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHM2 noise gate toggle\u003c\/strong\u003e- this affects how much signal is needed to pass- creating a simplified noise gate. One allows even minor signals to come through for no gating- the other creates a minor noise gate that cuts on hiss and background noise, and has a touch of gating at the end of the distortion decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFZ2 side\u003c\/strong\u003e- 3 completely unique modes makes this pedal feel like 3 individual pedals in one. Mid scoop (my favorite) Mid boost, and clean boost mode.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn boost mode, you are able to use the EQ section which is not possible with the Behringer version. So, you can dial in a bass boost, a neutral boost, or a treble boost. On top of that, you can use the gain and volume control as well, helping you dial in a clean or dirty boost, at any volume desired.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe HM2 is going in series into the FZ2\u003c\/strong\u003e, so that way you can use the boost section to fatten up the HM2 tone. I had always been intrigued by the boss XT2 XTORTION.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ea commercial failure from boss, this pedal is underlooked, underthought of, and a sleeper. It did need some tuning to bring out the most in the circuit, so mine has a different voice but still has the XT2 character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen I wanted to add one of my favorite muff variants- an elk sustainar with endless tonal options.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe elk sustainar is a rare, vintage, expensive and very sought after japanese big muff variant, made famous through its use by Wata of Boris. If you have listened to their music, chances are you have heard this pedal. Pair with an orange head and a 4x12 cabinet for the full experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis pedal feels like a blurred mesh of the best era of music.\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewhat category of effect does this fit into?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDistortion (X side)- \u003c\/strong\u003ethis is for players who want a very heavy and saturated crunch that is similar to overdrive- but far heavier. Helps hit those pinch harmonics and brings out all the weird little hidden artifacts that are not present in clean guitars. Feels more linear\/predictable to play than a fuzz pedal, but has a raw crunchy texture similar to some fuzzes. Maybe a good way to say is- plays like an overdrive, saturated like a fuzz.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDistortion\/Fuzz (elk side)-\u003c\/strong\u003e this side is a 4 transistor muff style circuit, and these blur the lines between fuzz and distortion. In the hands, feels more like a distortion, but a bit looser and more unwieldy (think like maneuvering a light sword vs a heavy sword) but each note hits massive, with the decay and texture of a fuzz.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003ehow would I describe the feel and texture?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eX-\u003c\/strong\u003eIt is a truly unique sounding distortion pedal. Quite high gain, able to volume boost a lot. The punch knob employs some sort of magic that gives the distortion a deep mids crunch and hollow sounding resonance, that feels like raunchy 90s metal, alt rock, and even 2000s metalcore\/deathcore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ewith the dark knob, you can get a bright and fuller sounding frequency output around 12 o clock, with a super deep scooped tone as you dial it forward.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ewith external 3 mode clipping toggles for both soft and hard clipping, you get many different gain voices that are not available with the original. The clipping toggles feel like they chop off certain frequency ranges in the gain structure on this side.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eElk- \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eof all the muffs, this one represents an avalanche. Rumbling, massive, fat low end. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ewith the addition of a bias control that can slam the muff even louder, or create broken glitchy decay, sounds you never knew a muff even had.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3 way clipping on the muff interacts with the entire circuit, it genuinely feels like 3 different circuits. a bit hard to describe in words. One mode is more compressed and smooth overall, one is a classic muff sound with harder edge on the notes, and the middle position is blown out transistor clipping,\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLastly- 3 way mids toggles that adjust either the low pass or high pass mids on the tone knob- theres deep scoop, stock, and flat. Naturely, the big muff has very scooped mids since the tone control is a low pass or high pass, filtering out the middle frequencies. This toggle changes that, allowing for deeper tone control.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewhat kind of player would like this stompbox?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this pedal because I wanted it. It is a unique distortion that fills a role that other distortions like my Plague and SR-71 do not. I think the mids characteristics (the punch and dark knobs in specific) are so unique that I enjoy the vibe it gives me. This side fills my needs for metalcore, deathcore, nu metal, and just general 90s inspired heavy music. of course, it is not limited to those genres.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf course, the elk side is my favorite muff (tied with the V1 triangle I do) and the bias knob does so much to the circuit, having these two side by side just felt right, and unique.
